Rice and Lentils Porridge / No Spice Khichdi

Rice and Lentils porridge can be given to babies above 7 months old. It is mushy , velvety and melts in mouth. It is quite filling and rich in protein. I have been making this porridge for my daughter since she is 6 months old and this is the very first solid food I introduced to her. If you are making this porridge for a little bigger baby (above 1 year ), then you can add a little pepper to taste.

As a general guideline, by around 7 to 8 months, babies would be eating 3 serving of solid food items along with breast milk / formula, cereal, Vegetables are fruits. Introduce lentils and small amount of protein in baby's diet after 7 months.

Please start with very small quantity of this porridge to begin with. Make sure your baby is not having allergic reactions and then increase the quantity as per baby's needs.

Ingredients

  • 3 Tablespoon Rice
  • 1 and 1/2 Tablespoon Yellow Moong Dal
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Ghee / clarified butter
  • a pinch of cumin Seeds
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 Cup water

Directions

1. Wash rice and lentils together for 2 or 3 times
2. Soak it in drinking water for 15 minutes. Then drain the water completely and set aside
3. In a pan, heat ghee. When the ghee is warm, add cumin seeds. When they pop open, add the rice and lentils along with water
4. Add a big pinch of salt and turn the heat to medium / low
5. Cook until the rice and lentils are mushy or until it reached porridge consistency. If your kid is little big and able to chew rice, then you need not cook it to porridge consistency. You can cook until the rice and lentils are just cooked through
6. Cool completely before serving
